Lead Recovery John McCormick 2008-10-05 21:46
Some years ago there were machines around to recover lead shot from clay target ranges. Does anyone know if they are still about or if there is any other way of picking up accumulated shot ? With the current price of lead this may be a worthwhile exercise. If anyone can help please contact me at spidey@ihug.co.nz or 0276673146

I was very impressed with the standard of shooting during the course of the competition. Also alot of adult shooters can take a few pointers with regard to backing up squads.

World DTL Results Blue Freeman 2008-08-24 10:15
Before Timothy Dixon logs on and waxes lyrical, the Hutt Valley Gun Club membership congratulates all the Kiwi achievers and competitors in the world DTL competition. Obviously Colin Waghorn and Natalie Rooney stand out for their individual performances, but everyone in each of the teams also deserves congratulations. The number of times the words "New Zealand" appear in the results is tear forming and has made us all proud. We trust someone in the journalism business will pick up on these results and give them wider dissemination; performances such as these must be recognised. Hearty thanks too to Adrienne for all her efforts in getting these results onto the NZCTA website so quickly and keeping us all up with the play.
I guess Trevor will be buying the next round will he?

Olympic Double trap Kerran Jamieson Madden 2008-08-13 10:10
Congratulations to Graeme Ede for all your efforts in the Olympics, I'm not quite sure how a part time shooter and full time contractor is supossed to compete against a member of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit, on an equal footing, but I suppose that's one of the great irony's of amateur sport!!!! When you get back theres plenty of good sporting shoots for you get stuck into.
theres a link to the shooting results for those interested,

Hi Hamish & Tim. I agree with your sentiments. Have a look at what our Australian brothers are doing and you will see how proactive they are. The attached link is to their magazine and it has a report on an event run by Beretta Australia in conjunction with the ACTA. Awesome.

Also go and have a look at their other Magazine issues and read the presidents column. They are actually out there doin it.

Sport Exposure Timothy Dixon 2008-03-29 21:37
Couldn't agree more Hamish. At our local club we put in our results after every Club Match to the local rag. Most of the time they are published. Most of our articles on local shooters doing well are published as well. It does take a dedicated Publicity Officer, who is prepared to act fairly quickly to get good publicity as most local rag close off times are early on the Monday. Haven't quite worked out how to get TV coverage yet, so if anyone knows anything about that i would appreciate a few clues. Particularly for National events, which we do get to run occassionally. Advice to tasdisco@xtra.co.nz. Cheers Timothy Dixon

Sport Exposure Hamish Wilson 2008-03-19 14:33
I know this was discussed back in 2003 BUT why are we not pushing for more exposure of our sport??

There are numerous ways that greater exposure would enhance our sport.
Raising the profile of clubs in their own community's and thus raising the profile of the NZCTA and in tern that of the NZSF.

With the increase in profile sponsors will be better off, gaining greater exposure and this in turn MUST be good for the sport. The businesses out there that currently sponsor events are fantastic for the sport and what a way to nurture and encourage them but by obtaining great coverage in the Media for them.

The more exposure we are able to get the more the sport must grow as a result. The more people completing and belonging to the NZCTA must be good for the sport and future proof its existence.

A greater profile in the Media of our shooters achievements may help towards making SPARC taking some interesting in our beloved sport and for us to stand up and say hey we have some fantastic talent here that needs their support.

In the ever increasing PC world we live in some positive exposure of shooting events would not go a miss.

These are only but a few of the ways that we as a sport could benefit from greater media exposure.

I realise that it is up to the different media sources what they publish and broadcast but going on the local papers here I doubt they even receive the results to publish.

How much exposure did the recent DTL nationals get compared to other national events such as the national yachting and equestrian competitions held recently?? I say that we were pale in comparison!!!! And why??

Was that Media liaison position ever taken up within the NZCTA???

We owe to our clubs, sponsors and ourselves to try a gain some more exposure. Good things can only happen once that is achieved.

2009 FITASC World Champs Kerran Jamieson Madden 2008-02-06 08:21
I know that it's just turned 2008 and that this years World Champs are months away, but the 2009 FITASC Champs have just been announced. They will be in Warrnambool Victoria, from the 16-22 November 2009. Warrnambool is 265 K's away from Melbourne on the South West coast of Victoria. The Sporting Committee is urging all NZCTA sporting shooters to put this date in their books as it's bound to be surpurb event and the biggest and cheapest International shooting event they will ever attend. There is going to be good funding for this, and we are hoping to have full teams in all grades for this event. Details of all the requirements were in your last Newsletter so PLEASE read it carefully and put your hat in the ring. The Sporting Cmmttee has a totally clean board at this stage and no one is in the frame so go to it.

Looking at the 9 NZCTA members booked payed and entered it will be a vey good trip, very good!! You can only enter thru the FITASC website and all entries and payements are made to them.

FITASC REPORT DOUBLES RULES K.J. Madden 2008-01-15 09:14:49
There is a change of rule on 'report doubles' from my origional posting from Hugh Smith, sent to us by Ray McFarlane of FITASC. I know that you have to read it a couple of times to get it (well I did but...) but it is important as we will be using those rules for our major shoots.
The old ruling was incorrect, if on a double on report you missed the first target and the second was a no-target the call of the referee was "No-Target, lost on the first target, repeat the doublke for a result on the second target".
In this Hugh is correct.

What was wrong with the rule was that in FITASC if you kill both targets with the second shot you are scored One/One.

My amendment was that in the above situation the call of the referee would be "No-target, first shot is lost, repeat double for a result of the second shot.

In the original double the shooter has fired at the first target and then turned to fire at the second target, he has abandoned the first target.
In the repeat double he must fire at the first target and then turn and fire at the second target.
The only way he can score a kill on the first target of the double, is if he is lucky enough he hit it when shooting at the second target of the double.

The shooter is not allowed to deliberately miss the first target with the first shot and then fire the second shot at the first target.
If this is done the double is declared lost and lost.

The crux of the problem is that the shooter has chosen in the first double when he missed the first target to abandon any attempt to kill it with the second shot and turned to shoot the second target.
If he wished to shoot the first target with the second shot, he had the opportunity to do so on the first double.

The Hugh Smith interpretation was incorrect.
No shooter can take advantage of a No-Target to change his original approach to shooting the double.

I have had this rule interpretation verified by Hans Wenger who is the Chairman of the FITASC Sporting Commission.

New FITASC Sporting Rules K.J.Madden 2007-11-13 10:42
Summary of FITASC Sporting Rule change

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The following report is by Hugh Smith.

FITASC SPORTING NEWS
You may be aware, or not, as the case may be, that there is a major change to the FITASC Sporting rulebook with an effective date of
January 1st 2008.
To assist FITASC Sporting competitors and the Referees I will attempt
to draw a brief comparison of the replaced, amended and introduced rules
for next season.
These rules have long needed a good digging over, for that reason
together with a few disciplinary arisings over the past European and
World events; we now have a new rulebook.
The first changes are of more interest to the course designers.
Chapter 2 (2,5.1) ?Trajectories?, requires that the competitor must be
able to discharge 2 shots at the presented single target, no real problem
there; however, it also introduces degrees of difficulty that corresponds
to the number of targets you would expect an ?average? competitor would
or would not break. There is a table for assistance however, the
important word in the text is ?Recommended?.
As regards introducing degrees of difficulty at UK registered and GB
Selection events, as Chairman for BICTSF FITASC Sporting I see this as
a recommendation and will trust our course designers to use a common
sense approach to this inclusion.
Targets may now be of any colour that stands out against the
presentation background. Previously they should have been Black or
Orange.
Also new to this chapter is the statement that ?Doubles must be shot at
targets already launched as singles from that position?. In other words
you can no longer introduce a Rafale or Simultaneous pair unless you have
shot at both of these targets at that shooting position.
There is a new Chapter 5 covering referees; this chapter reminds the
referees that they shall remain impartial to the competitors regardless
of Nationality or Reputation. It also reminds the referees that the
competitor can protest their (the referees) pronounced decision and not
be influenced by other competitors or spectators.
Chapter 6 reminds the competitors/squad that they are not entitled to
intervene or express their opinions on target rulings (made by the
referee) difficult, it is only natural to let the referee know that he may
have missed a chip. What this inclusion it is trying to eliminate is the
relentless and obvious attempt from members of the squad to claim a
target for their friend or, during Shoot Offs attempts from individual
spectators to influence the referees decision on a difficult call.
Chapter 6 also introduces tables that make it easier for the referee and
competitor alike to understand calls of ?No Bird? it also informs us that
the ?Gun/Cartridge Malfunction rule has changed. You are now allowed one
(previously 2) Gun or Cartridge malfunction without penalty in a round of
25 targets.
On the second occurrence of a Gun/Cartridge malfunction you will start
to loose targets, auto users may fall foul of this amendment.
I recommend you read the table provided in the rulebook to understand
the variations on the ?No Bird? theme but I will high lite one important
change for the benefit of the competitor and the referee.
When shooting doubles on report if you miss with the first shot and then
the referee calls ?No Bird? on the second target i.e. a broken second
target or Gun/Cart malfunction of the second shot. The referee will now
call ?No Bird first shot established repeat to establish the second shot?.
Previously the referee would have established the first target lost. Now
the competitor can chose to shoot at the first target again but must miss
with their first shot if they choose to do so.
This now also allows the referee to score both targets should the
competitor break both of the targets with the second shot.
In short it is the shot that is now established not the target.
In Chapter 7 Weapons and Ammunition, the main inclusion is the exclusion
of Pump Action Shotguns and the inclusion of a + 2% tolerance to the 28
gram load.
In Chapter 8 we have an extensive set of requirements as regards
competitors conduct most of which have been there for some time
however, 8.1 is specific to attitude and abusive language, in other words
self control. There are now stiff penalties against the competitor should
they fall foul of this rule.
8.10 removes the option to remove eye protection in inclement weather,
it is now mandatory in all countries.
Chapter 9, Appeals.
9.1 lays the onus on the competitor to break his/her targets in places
that are visible to the referee.
9.5 tabulates the ability of a competitor to appeal and how to appeal a
referee?s decision, it also informs both parties how to address such an
appeal.
More importantly at Chapter 10, Refusal to comply, once the referee
announces their decision the competitor must call for their next target
within 20 seconds (or leave the stand if it is their last target) or they will
be subject to penalties listed in Chapter 13.
In brief penalties that may be awarded by the Jury include loss of 1 or
25 targets or exclusion from the competition.
I have attempted to stick to the most salient points of change. There are
many more new inclusions, I recommend you read the new book and
compare against the old one, only then will you will be fully aware and
comfortable when you start to compete or referee in 2008.
Good luck and good shooting/refereeing.
Hugh Smith
Chairman BICTSF FITASC Sporting
GB FITASC Sporting Technical Committee.

Skeet Nationals Brant Woodward 2007-10-18 06:25
Hi Rex. Great idea. I am a great believer that those that have great ideas are the best ones to run them as they have the passion to make it happen. If you can organise an event at your club or another appropriate one, then I for one would attend and bring other along as well, if it does not clash with any ISSF event. Cheers Brant

Canterbury Clay Target Club - Targets Brant Woodward 2007-10-18 06:21
I would like to congratulate Canterbury on their efforts in trialling new targets and Gavin Searle's comments that they want to provide the best targets possible for the shooters. The targets trialled (Laporte 2004) for the ISSF Zone Shoot a week ago were excellent and resulted in some excellent scores considering the difficult wind conditions. If these targets are used for the DTL Nationals in March we will see many possibles & excellent scores I am sure. Once again congratulations to Canturbury on making the effort.

Skeet Nationals Rex Smart 2007-09-26 20:04
I can't believe that Skeet shooters are happy in the knowledge that we have over 21 months between our National champs. I wonder what the DTL shooters would say if their Nationals were postponed for that period of time? Surely a January event should be held 'as an extra' rather than delete the event?
Is there a club out there who would stage a 'Nationals' type event in Jan/Feb with multi gauges included?
Cheers Rex
